Commentaries

As part of the evidence base for the Equipol project we have developed commentaries to explain some of the key research issues and areas of study, the implications for health and social inequality and the importance of robust evidence to support policy changes.

In this study, we show that mortality rates in the north and south of England diverged alarmingly for young and middle-aged adults in the 1990s, resulting in 1,800 excess northern deaths per year, largely due to alcohol and drug misuse. This has compounded the country's long-standing regional health divide.
